The 3 phases of proper injury recovery (most skip Phase 2)

Most people focus on pain relief but recovery has multiple stages.

Phase 1: Pain and symptom management

Goal:

  • Reduce pain

  • Restore basic movement

This is where most people start and stop.

Phase 2: Strength and control (most skipped)

Goal:

  • Rebuild strength

  • Improve stability

  • Correct movement patterns

This phase is critical but often overlooked.

Without it:

  • The body remains vulnerable

  • Compensation patterns persist

Phase 3: Return to full activity

Goal:

  • Gradually reintroduce higher demands

  • Build resilience

  • Prevent re-injury

Why skipping Phase 2 causes problems

Without rebuilding strength and control:

  • You return to activity unprepared

  • The same issue comes back
