Overthinking Pain: How fear makes injuries worse

Pain is physical but how you respond to it is just as important.

The fear cycle

Pain often triggers worry:

“What if I make it worse?”

“What if something is seriously wrong?”

This leads to:

  • Avoiding movement

  • Increased muscle tension

  • Reduced confidence

Over time, this creates a loop: Pain → fear → less movement → more stiffness → more pain

Why this slows recovery

When you stop moving:

  • Muscles weaken

  • Joints stiffen

  • Sensitivity increases

Your body becomes less capable, reinforcing the cycle.

What helps break it

  • Understanding your pain

  • Gradually reintroducing movement

  • Building confidence step by step

You don’t need to ignore pain but you also don’t need to fear it.

The goal:

Move from:

“I’m afraid to move”

To:

“I know how to move safely”

If fear is holding you back from recovering, we can help you rebuild confidence in your body so you can move without hesitation.
