Why Comparing Your Recovery to Someone Else's Is a Mistake

One of the fastest ways to become frustrated during recovery is by comparing your progress to someone else's.

A friend recovered from a similar injury in six weeks.

A colleague returned to sport within a month.

So why is your recovery taking longer?

Every recovery is different.

Even when injuries appear similar, recovery is influenced by factors such as:

  • Age

  • Fitness level

  • Previous injuries

  • Sleep quality

  • Stress levels

  • Activity demands

No two recovery journeys are identical.

The danger of unrealistic expectations:

Comparisons often lead people to:

  • Rush their rehabilitation

  • Return too quickly

  • Ignore warning signs

  • Become discouraged unnecessarily

Focus on your own progress.

A better question is:

"Am I improving compared to where I was last month?"

That comparison is far more useful than measuring yourself against someone else's timeline.

Recovery isn't a race.

The goal isn't to recover faster than someone else.

The goal is to recover fully.

If you're unsure whether your recovery is progressing appropriately, physiotherapy can help provide realistic expectations and measurable goals.
