Why Mobility Is About More Than Flexibility
Mobility and flexibility are often used interchangeably.
They're related but not the same thing.
Flexibility is passive
Flexibility refers to how far a muscle can lengthen.
For example, touching your toes measures flexibility.
Mobility is active
Mobility is your ability to actively control movement through a range of motion.
It's what allows you to:
Squat comfortably
Reach overhead
Move efficiently
Why mobility matters more
Having flexibility without control can still leave you vulnerable to injury.
Mobility combines:
Strength
Stability
Coordination
Flexibility
Better movement requires both
Improving mobility often creates longer-lasting results than focusing on stretching alone.
If you feel stiff despite stretching regularly, physiotherapy can help determine whether mobility training should be part of your plan.
