Why Recovery Isn't Always Linear

Many people expect recovery to follow a straight line.

Pain goes down. Function goes up. Problem solved.

Unfortunately, that's rarely how recovery works.

Expect ups and downs.

A typical recovery may include:

  • Great days

  • Frustrating days

  • Unexpected soreness

  • Temporary setbacks

This can feel discouraging if you're expecting constant improvement.

Why fluctuations happen:

Recovery is influenced by:

  • Activity levels

  • Sleep quality

  • Stress

  • Workload

  • Overall health

Even positive progress can include occasional difficult days.

Focus on the trend:

Instead of evaluating recovery based on a single day, look at the bigger picture.

Ask yourself:

  • Am I stronger than last month?

  • Am I moving better than before?

  • Are symptoms less frequent?

Progress isn't perfection.

Most successful recoveries involve some setbacks along the way.

If recovery feels unpredictable, physiotherapy can help you understand what's normal and what may require adjustment.
