Why you feel worse after starting rehab (and why it’s normal)

You start rehab and suddenly feel more sore.

It’s easy to think something is wrong but what’s actually happening is that our body is adapting to new demands.

This can lead to:

  • Muscle soreness

  • Temporary discomfort

  • Increased awareness of movement

Why this is normal

If you’ve been inactive or avoiding movement, your body isn’t used to:

  • Loading tissues

  • Activating certain muscles

  • Moving through full ranges

This initial discomfort is part of the process.

When it’s okay

  • Soreness is mild to moderate

  • It settles within 24–48 hours

  • It doesn’t significantly limit movement

When to adjust

  • Pain is sharp or worsening

  • Symptoms linger or escalate

  • Movement becomes restricted

The key takeaway

Some discomfort is part of progress but it should be controlled and temporary.

If you’re unsure whether your rehab soreness is normal, we can guide you so you stay on track without risking setbacks.
